The ACT Government is crying ‘we’re too poor’ to re-open Flynn Primary School at the very same time that it is dishing out $230 million of Federal money for ACT schools and promising more ACT money through upcoming appropriations.
The Flynn Primary School Parents and Citizens Association today cautiously welcomed news of an Inquiry into school closures, stressing that the Inquiry needs to fully examine the information and processes that led to decisions to close schools.
The ACT Legislative Assembly will today announce an inquiry into the Government’s decision to close 23 schools across Canberra. The Assembly’s Standing Committee on Education, Training and Youth Affairs will review the Government’s controversial Towards 2020 policy that prompted the mass closures in the 2006-07 budget.
The John Flynn Community Group is lobbying for part of the Flynn Primary School to be opened up for much needed community childcare. With a severe shortage of childcare places in the area, the community has proposed that the ACT government open the doors at Flynn so that a section of the school can be used for this purpose while discussions continue about the remainder.
