The John Flynn Community Group is lobbying for part of the Flynn Primary School to be opened up for much needed community childcare. With a severe shortage of childcare places in the area, the community has proposed that the ACT government open the doors at Flynn so that a section of the school can be used for this purpose while discussions continue about the remainder.
The proposal would save up to $2 million against the promise to build another centre, possibly in the Charnwood/Dunlop area. The Flynn community repeatedly proposed that childcare be incorporated on the site in its submissions to government in 2006, 2007 and 2008. A heritage nomination has been lodged over the school and grounds and the Flynn Primary School P&C Association is also continuing its efforts to restore the school and community centre through ongoing action in the Supreme Court.
