No vote on motion to re-open Flynn

The motion to re-open four schools — Flynn, Hall, Cook and Tharwa primary schools — was put to the Assembly today by the Canberra Liberals, but there was no vote. Labor’s Andrew Barr opposed the motion. The Greens Meredith Hunter gave no speech, moving instead to adjourn debate to another day.

The inquiry report into school closures has heavily criticised Labor’s school closures, but failed to recommend any substantive reform or to re-open Flynn.

School closures provide lessons in ‘how not to consult’

It was bittersweet news for many ACT communities this week when the Chief Minister announced a consultation on how to consult, almost three years exactly after the Government began its infamous consultation on plans to close 23 government schools. The school closure process, currently the subject of a Standing Committee Inquiry, was universally condemned as ‘how not to consult’, and was widely regarded to be one of the issues that triggered the massive slump for Labor at last year’s ACT election.

Flynn welcomes Barr admission – schools were closed without a social impact study

Flynn Primary School P&C today welcomed Education Minister Andrew Barr’s admission to the Assembly inquiry on School Closures that he closed schools without a sound analysis of social impacts.
