National Memorial plaque stolen

John Flynn memorial with plaque removed and name covered

On the ABC TV and news last night, the ACT Government has admitted to removing the memorial plaque to the Rev John Flynn of the Royal Flying Doctor Service, and concreting over the Flynn name on the memorial in the Canberra Suburb of Flynn.

At 4:30pm yesterday (666 radio) Minister Hargreaves was quoted as saying this was the first he heard about it.

By 7pm (ABC news) Hargreaves was quoted as saying they did it to protect it from vandalism.

Vicki Dunne has pointed out that it seemed to be an attempt to obliterate not just the Flynn school but an entire community.

By 9:30 today, the entire memorial was painted white (the paint was still wet).

Quite a few people from the wider Flynn community are not happy at the desecration.

No one knows quite why the ACT Government would do all this.
